Expectations for a DMEK Transplant

The cornea serves an important purpose. It bends and refracts light rays. When a person’s cornea becomes milky or swollen, we perform a corneal transplant. A Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty, or DMEK, is a particular type of corneal transplant. It involves using donor Descemet membrane and endothelium to replace the innermost layers of the cornea. This practice allows for an exact anatomic replacement. Some people are not a candidate for DMEK and may need a different type of corneal transplant (DSAEK, Penetrating Keratoplasty, or DALK).

A DMEK transplant surgery only takes about 45 minutes to perform and general anesthesia isn’t needed. So, you can expect a quick a procedure near Sandy, UT. After the DMEK procedure, a gas bubble will be placed in your eye in order to keep the graft in place, and you’ll be able to go home.

At home, you’ll need to lie down for 24 hours. This is required so that there is maximum contact with the air bubble and the graft. Then for the next 48 hours, you can cut your lying down time to 50%. This can be done by alternating between lying down and standing up every two hours. Antibiotic and steroid drops will also be used while your eye heals. Don’t worry if your vision is blurry after the DMEK procedure, this is because of the air bubble that will be in your eye for 5-7 days. It usually takes three to four days before your vision starts to clear up.
