What to Expect with a DMEK Procedure

The cornea is the clear front part of the eye, think of it like the window into the eye. It is an important part of the eye because it bends and refracts light rays. If a person’s cornea becomes swollen or cloudy, a corneal transplant is often indicated. There are different types of corneal transplants and a DMEK transplant (short for Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty) is the newest iteration of endothelial keratoplasty (partial thickness corneal transplant). With a DMEK transplant, donor Descemet membrane and endothelium replaces the innermost layers of the cornea. With this method, you will have an exact anatomic replacement. Some people are not a candidate for DMEK and may need a different type of corneal transplant (DSAEK, Penetrating Keratoplasty, or DALK).

You can expect a quick procedure when you get a DMEK transplant surgery near Murray, UT. The DMEK procedure takes approximately 45 minutes and general anesthesia isn’t usually required. At the end of the DMEK replacement surgery, a gas bubble will be placed in your eye so the transplant will stay in place. You’ll be able to go home afterward.

When you get home, you’ll need to lie flat for 24 hours to maximize contact with the air bubble and the graft. Over the next two days, you’ll only lie down 50% of the time and you can alternate every two hours throughout the day. Steroid and antibiotic drops will also be used during the healing process. You can expect your vision to be blurry at first due to the air bubble, but it will begin to clear up after the third or fourth day.
